Both Sergeants Instants Before the Attacker Received Electric Shock

A senior officer who jumped to the assistance of a partner that got attacked by a knife attacker was granted the King's Commendation for Valor.

Sgt Tim Ansell fought with 27-year-old Jacob Brown after he placed a blade to the neck of his partner Sgt Marc Foster.

Brown began the violence as the officers and their third officer, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were speaking to a motorist after a traffic accident in that location in mid-2023.

Brown stabbed and slashed both Sgt Ansell and Sgt Foster before Police Constable Wolstencroft stunned him with a stun gun.

Officer-mounted and dashcam recording made public by the force depicted Brown, that was clothed in dark clothing with a hood up, run up to Sgt Foster from behind with a weapon pointed forward.

He collided with the officer who tripped and fell to the pavement, before Sergeant Ansell stepped in and attempted to subdue him to the floor although being continually attacked with the weapon.

Sgt Ansell stated audibly: "Please provide something on my neck now, I'm bleeding in the neck."

Sgt Ansell sustained multiple lacerations to his throat and additional injuries to his arms and body, while Sergeant Foster received cut injuries.

The department reported Sergeant Foster utilized his palms to stem his fellow officer's blood loss prior to emergency responders arrived.

The new recognition arrives after the three officers won departmental Courage Honors in October 2023 and the prestigious bravery honor from the regional union branch in early 2024.

They additionally received a North West Bravery Award in July 2024.

"The actions of the entire team eventually rescued one another and meant no bystanders suffered any wounds."

Brown received a sentence to an indefinite hospital order in April 2024, according to the department.
