Major Online Failure Affects Numerous Online Platforms and Applications

A large-scale web outage has impacted many sites and mobile apps worldwide, with users noting problems getting online following issues at the cloud computing service.

The disrupted services include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-owned operations like its key e-commerce site and the Ring home security firm.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was affected along with its branches Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with further notifications of issues accessing the the tax authority online portal on Monday morning. Also in the UK, several Ring users took to social media to state their home gadgets were malfunctioning.

In the UK alone, accounts of issues on specific applications totaled the tens of thousands for each app.

Officials confirmed that the issue started in the Atlantic coast of the America at the cloud division, a unit that offers essential online backbone for a host of companies, who lease space on Amazon servers. AWS is the most extensive cloud computing platform.

Shortly after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), the company announced “increased failure rates and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the eastern US of the US. The ripple effect seemed to affect platforms around the world, and the outage tracking website indicating problems with the same sites in various regions.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that reports on web disruptions, additionally noted a surge in issues on the start of the week, with many of them found in the Virginia area, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where AWS said the outage originated.
