Working Life of Earnings Not Enough for UK Workers to Enter Wealthiest 10%, Study Finds

Per fresh research, the typical employee in the UK would need 52 years' worth of salary to reach the financial standing of the wealthiest 10% in the country.

Growing Wealth Gap Over Time

The analysis reviewed wealth distribution information from the 2020-22 timeframe and found that in the pre-financial crisis era, it would have required nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to join the wealthiest decile of the financial hierarchy.

An economic expert part of the analysis commented: "Economic disparities in Britain are currently so significant that a typical full-time employee accumulating their complete salary throughout their career would continue to be incapable to achieve the peak of the wealth ladder."

Assessing the Wealth Divide

The research discovered that the disparity between the net worth of the median citizen and someone in the richest segment was one million pounds in the pre-crisis period, but had increased to £1.3 million in actual value by the pandemic years.

The analyst continued: "These differences are particularly worrying as economic movement in Britain is low – people that start life wealthy tend to stay wealthy, and vice versa."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Despite the wealth gap widening in specific figures, the portion of overall assets in the UK possessed by the richest households – called "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the eighties," per the research.

Throughout these years, total wealth in the UK surged from three times the yearly economic output, to approximately 7.5x.

Contributors of Economic Disparity

Referred to as "passive" appreciation, through rising house prices and changes in retirement fund assessments, were the key contributors of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, as stated in the analysis.

These gains generally flowed to older, property-owning households, the research shows – worsening the intergenerational wealth divide.

Intergenerational Wealth Disparities

The typical financial disparity between individuals aged 30-34 and those in their early 60s more than doubled in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in 2006-08, to £310k.

Regional Differences

Furthermore, the study revealed pronounced geographic differences, with the median value of assets in recent years amounting to £290,000 in the SE of England, where real estate values have typically increased quickly, compared with £110k in the north-east.

Health Crisis Years Effects

During the pandemic, when countless laborers were supported by the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and pandemic lockdowns curtailed consumption options, the data shows numerous families were able to save, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, however. "The median home in the poorest fifth saw their cash reserves grow by only eighty pounds throughout the health crisis (2019-20 to 2021-22), broadly the same as the pre-crisis period. Conversely, the average household in the highest income quintile saw their cash reserves grow by 4,200 pounds," the analysis concludes.
