Youth Found Dead Following False Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains
One teenage boy was found dead just days after being wrongly blamed of stealing the cremated remains of a deceased infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Tragic Discovery
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his body in his bedroom at his Flintshire home on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Allegations Begin
The investigation learned how his mother received a message on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The communication added: "Tell him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a testimony presented to the court, the mother said the individual had been in the news, asserting her infant's ashes had been stolen in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An official inquiry from authorities later determined the alleged break-in victim had "provided false information" and "it now appears that said items was not taken in the first place".
News coverage about the supposed stolen ashes generated online comments, and although the teenager was not identified in the messages, his parent said people "understood it was him".
The "social media content were extremely upsetting", she stated.
Emotional Health Effect
She explained that her son had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' views really mattered to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was not true".
Kai was detained at home, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later released pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing heard, but had failed to contacted the relatives by the moment of his death.
Withdrawal and Anxiety
His parent said Kai "became isolated" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could seem like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her son informed her he had gone into the residence because the woman who lived there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he needed, but denied taking anything.
Digital Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being bullied digitally after the allegations.
The proceedings heard that one young adult encouraged Kai to kill himself.
She had no concerns on the night before he died, describing how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".
She described him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "family is completely devastated".
He had been "clearly hiding his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not bear to have anybody "think bad of him".
Educational Response
The hearing received testimony from school personnel at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some students talking that the student had been arrested and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the discussion, the staff member said she rang Kai's family telephone and provided a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The proceedings learned his parents said they did not got that communication.
Official Conclusion
Senior coroner informed the hearing he would await documents regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with suspects with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.
Providing a descriptive finding, he stated: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a young child.
"Likely falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.
"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and after his interview he was freed while investigations proceeded."
The coroner determined: "There is no proof that the acts or failures of any organization caused or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a self-inflicted action it is not possible to determine his purpose."
